So last night I went camping. Car camping, but camping down by the New River. Reason I chose the river was twofold, the scenic beauty of the river and the proximity to work. I chose to stay with 'New River Junction', the company that does tubing out on the New River. Their setup is pretty nice, basically mowed fields buy the river with fire pits in each area. The downside...
Trains.
Plain and simple. Let me explain a little about this section of the New River (who's name is ironic, as it is believed to be a very old river). This section of the New River is bounder on both sides by train tracks, very active train tracks. What I mean by active is a train every couple hours. And the trains love to blow their whistles/horns as they come through this section of the valley. This leads to... being woken up every two hours. An interesting experience and I'm glad this was a smaller trip and I did not bring a large group out to the river. That being said my morning was magical as I sat overlooking a pretty rocky section of the river reading some of Paul's letter to the Romans. The section was on freedom, which is awesome. But the only freedom I wanted last night was freedom from trains...

The college I went to borders a very active train line. My fraternity house would shake with the passing trains. Believe it or not, you actually get used to it and don't even notice it after awhile. People would come to visit and say "How can you sleep with all that noise?" To which I would reply "What noise?" Or maybe it was all the alcohol that dulled my senses... Either way, I missed the trains when I left college.
Trains are TON'S of Racket that rumble thru or lives. You would have thought they would have silent wistles or horns by now, or rubber wheels. It probably was not so bad when the fuel was cheaper for everything went by truck. Have you ever stayed in a room or home that is beside a interstate? Part of our civil inhabitance. Look at it this way, you have found a spot to listen and harmonize with TRAIN'S!
RM - I too went to school with trains! And there was something soothing about the consistency of them!
Rex - I know they were not what you had hoped for as they are not so umm "natural" but...thank God for train whistles - some cars and people wouldn't be alive without them.
I am not jealous anymore. :)
